The certification, issued by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses Inc., is a voluntary mechanism for validating professional knowledge and expertise in a specialty field. COHN is associated with management and workers' goals for a safe and healthy workplace.

To maintain COHN certification, eligible nurses must demonstrate continuing practicing and education in occupational health nursing.
