Earnest, a graduate of Florida State University, has managed production of crops and ginning since 1976. He serves on the advisory board of the University of Missouri Delta Center.

He received the award during the NCI annual meeting, held in conjunction with the National Cotton Council's 61st anniversary meeting in Washington.
