Southeast Hospice director Judy Aslin, left and Southeast Missouri Hospital Marketing and Communications Department staff member Maggie Friend are recipients of a 1996 Award of Excellence, presented by National Hospice Organization's (HNO) Excellence in Education Programming Competition.

Jan Whitehouse of Marble Hill has been appointed general manager for KUGT, a Christian radio station at Jackson.

Whitehouse previously worked for the Oasis Network KNYD, a Christian radio station in Tulsa, Okla.

KUGT provides broadcast coverage to the Jackson and Cape Girardeau area.

A. Brian Yarbrough has joined the Heartland Division of the American Cancer Society as development specialist.

Yarbrough, a mass communications graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, will be responsible for fund-raising efforts in Butler, Cape Girardeau, Mississippi, Perry, Ripley and Scott counties.

Yarbrough was employed at Boatmen's National Bank while attending college.

The American Cancer Society, 937 Broadway, is a community-based, voluntary health organization.

George Hathhorn has been named representative with The Prudential's St. Charles Agency.

Hathhorn will work out of the company's Cape Girardeau agency, 1020 N. Kingshighway.

He will service clients in the Cape Girardeau area.

The award, for a locally produced video about Hospice care, was presented recently during an awards ceremony in Chicago.

The video, a 14-minute video entitled "A Special Kind of Caring," was conceived by Aslin and written and directed by Friend.

The video is used to educate Hospice volunteers, families and health care professionals concerning the benefits of Hospice support in the home or nursing homes.

Southeast Hospice was one of 15 Hospice organizations recognized.

Sharon Ryan has joined Lucy Lee Healthcare System at Poplar Bluff as senior manager of quality support services.

Ryan will oversee the departments and functions that support the hospital's medical staff, medical records, quality utilization and medical staff services.

Ryan, now of Poplar Bluff, is a Chicago-area native. She previously worked as vice president of quality support services at Garden Grove, Calif., Hospital, a Tenet Health System Facility. Lucy Lee is also a member of the Tenet system. Ryan has a bachelor's degree in business administration and is a certified medical staff coordinator.

Marilyn Schott, nurse manager of Southeast Missouri Hospital's urology unit, has been named president-elect of the Missouri Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE).

Schott, who is completing a two-year term as MONE secretary, will assume duties as president-elect in January. She was elected during the recent Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) convention at Osage Beach.

MONE, an affiliate group of the MHA, advances leadership in nursing service through the exchange of ideas, information and materials.

Schott, an employee at Southeast Missouri Hospital since 1970, received her associate degree in nursing in 1970 and bachelor's degree in 1978, both from Southeast Missouri State University. She received a master's degree in health administration from Southeast in 1990.

She is a member and past board member of the 8th District Nurses Association of the Missouri Nurses Association. She is also a member of the Missouri Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association and the American Organization of Nurse Executives.

Troy L. Wilson, chief executive officer of The First National Bank, has been appointed to the American Bankers Association's Community Bankers Council.

Council members are drawn from all 50 states and are appointed to three-year terms. The members provide input on legislative and regulatory matters. He will advise the association on issues emerging among the nation's 9,000 community banks, such as new technologies that are dramatically changing the way banking services are accessed by consumer.

Wilson has been with First National Bank since 1985 and had served as the bank's vice president, executive vice president and president.

He is a graduate of University of Oklahoma, with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He also graduated from the Graduate School of Banking of the South.

Vernon Schoen, charge nurse for Southeast Missouri Hospital's Critical Care Unit, has received the 1996 "Critical Care Nurse of the Year" award, presented by the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).

Schoen, an employee at Southeast Hospital since 1974, received his diploma in nursing from Lutheran Medical Center in St. Louis and his bachelor's degree in nursing from Southeast Missouri State University.

Schoen has served in several capacities at Southeast Hospital, including staff nurse, assistant nurse manager, nurse manager and patient care coordinator. He has been involved in critical care nursing at Southeast for 19 years.

He has certification as a critical care registered nurse and advanced cardiac life support. He is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Schoen is the seventh consecutive Southeast Missouri Hospital nurse to receive the award.

Michael Overschmidt has been inducted into the United Parcel Service (UPS) Circle of Honor, an elite group of UPS drivers who have achieved more than 25 years of safe driving without an avoidable accident.

Overschmidt was one of 15 drivers who was recently inducted into the Circle of Honor during a special banquet held in St. Louis.
