Karen Hendrickson of Cape Girardeau has been elected to a second term as president of the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
Hendrickson, assistant administrator and chief nursing officer at Southeast Missouri Hospital, was appointed to the board in 1993 by Gov. Mel Carnahan. She served as secretary in 1994, vice president in 1995, and president of the nine-member board last year.
The board has statutory authority to regulate the state's 62,000 registered nurses, including certified nurse anesthetists and 22,000 licensed practical nurses.
"The past year has been a productive one for the board and we look forward to meeting new goals during the next 12 months," said Hendrickson.
Hendrickson said she was particularly pleased to see the Advance Practice Nurse Rule and the Collaborative Practice Rule become law during the past year. This year, said Hendrickson, the board will turn its attention to accomplishing revised minimum standards for both professional and practical nursing programs.
Hendrickson has served as Southeast's chief nursing officer for 13 years. She is a graduate of the Barnes Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis and has a bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in psychological counseling from Southeast Missouri State University. She recently completed her doctorate in education from The University of Memphis, Tenn.
