The University of Missouri Extension office in Cape Girardeau County -- Small Business Technology Development Center will offer a class to help small business owners learn how to use social media sites to their advantage, according to a news release from the office.

The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 8 at the University of Missouri extension office in Jackson, 684 W. Jackson Trail, and will be divided into two parts. The morning session will cover social media sites and how they can be used to increase sales. The afternoon session will be spent building accounts and implementing them for business, the release said.

Erica Wheeler, director of brand strategy for BOLD Marketing in Cape Girardeau, will instruct the class.

Attendees will need laptop computers for the class, and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The registration fee is $75, and $100 if attendees register after Jan. 31.

To register or for more information, call the office at 243-3581. If 10 people have not registered by Feb. 3, the class will be canceled. If the Jackson School District is closed because of weather, the class will be canceled and rescheduled.

Tri-State AMP calling for ADDY Awards entries

Tri-State Advertising and Market Professionals is asking for entries for the 2013-2014 local American Advertising Awards Competition.

The competition will include Cape Girardeau, Paducah, Ky., and Harrisburg, Ill., markets, according to a news release from organization treasurer Emily Sikes Blattel.

"The ADDY Awards honor advertising excellence in all media, including print, broadcast, out-of-home, web/digital and public service advertising," the release said.

The competition is open to members of Tri-State AMP and nonmembers. Entries must be received by 4 p.m. Friday at the Wright Group, 126 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Entry fees vary.

AMP speaker to tell about using chaos

The Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals Jan. 28 meeting will feature speaker Steve Keller, a producer, writer and programmer.

The presentation, "Shaking Hands With Chaos: Death, Destruction and the Creative Process," will be at 11:30 a.m. at Port Cape Girardeau in downtown Cape Girardeau. It will explain that "chaos is an unavoidable part of the creative process and a construct that one can learn to embrace," according to a news release from the organization.

Keller is the CEO of iV, an audio agency that provides audio branding for a range of global agencies and brands.

USPS invites public to form advisory council

The public is invited by the U.S. Postal Service to attend the first meeting to establish a local Customer Advisory Council that will consist of volunteer postal customers.

The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark St., according to a news release from the USPS.

The Customer Advisory Council will provide a forum allowing the volunteer customers to express ideas, concerns and suggestions to postal officials. Postal managers will answer questions; clarify postal rules, regulations and procedures; discuss and resolve service problems; and inform the council members of new and changing postal services and programs, the release said.

Applications for the council will be available at the meeting. They also are available at the Cape Girardeau Post Office, 475 Kell Farm Drive.
