The newest Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market store in the region will open Wednesday morning.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at 2021 Independence St. in Cape Girardeau. The new 41,000-square-foot store will feature a full line of groceries, including produce; departments with health, beauty, cleaning and pet supplies; a pharmacy with a drive-through lane; and Wal-Mart pickup, where customers can shop online at Walmart.com for products not carried in the store and have the items delivered there for free.
After Wednesday's opening, the store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The store's opening will create up to 95 jobs, including full and part time, according to a news release from Mitchell Communications Group on behalf of Wal-Mart. James Dodd will manage the new store.
Development of the site for the new Wal-Mart store began after the Plaza Galleria, a multiuse retail center, was torn down in 2013. No businesses had operated in the center for nearly eight years prior. The area had been a target for development as far as city officials were concerned.
"I am very pleased to welcome the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market to our city and our Mid-Town retail shopping area," said Mayor Harry Rediger in the recent release. "This addition to our retail community further enhances our regional hub status, provides additional jobs for our city, and adds to our local sales tax base."
Other grocery stores in the area near the new store are Ruler Foods, ALDI and Schnucks.
The Cape Girardeau/Jackson area now has four Wal-Mart stores, including the new store, a Wal-Mart Supercenter store in each city and a Sam's Club in Cape Girardeau.
A Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market store also opened Jan. 7 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Wednesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony will include presentations of grants from Wal-Mart to community groups, according to the release.
A popular local eatery has a second location.
BG's Olde Tyme Deli opened a restaurant at 252 E. Jackson Blvd. in Jackson earlier this month. The new restaurant has a menu similar to that of the Cape Girardeau location, where the potato skins remain a best-selling item. It also has patio seating and serves beer and wine.
Delivery and carryout service are available by calling 243-1887.
Jerry Lynn bought the Cape Girardeau location at 205 S. Plaza Way in 2013 and owns the new Jackson restaurant.
Hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Mario's Pasta House, an Italian restaurant, was in the location of the new Jackson BG's. That restaurant recently moved to Cape Girardeau and opened at 1740 Broadway as Mario and Angela's Italian Cucina, according to a business license application filed at Cape Girardeau's city hall.
The Cape Girardeau license office has moved to the Town Plaza from downtown and will be open in the new location for the first time today.
The office issues driver's licenses and motor vehicle registrations for the Missouri Department of Revenue. The former office on Spanish Street closed for two days last week so staff could take inventory and move operations. The new office is at 51 S. Plaza Way, on the Independence Street side of the Town Plaza. MCLB Management Co. is the contracted office operator.
The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner is set for Friday at the Show Me Center. Among the awards presented are those for outstanding businesspeople and businesses, along with recognitions for active chamber membership. More information is available by calling the chamber at 335-3312.
