For decades, the Hutson family has sold furniture in their store on Main Street in downtown Cape Girardeau. Now, from one family business springs another.

Atelier, a boutique gift shop that is the brainchild of Jerra Hutson, opened just down the road at 31C Main St.

As a buyer for Hutson's Fine Furniture and Mattress, Hutson for years would come across unique items she wished she could bring home but wouldn't necessarily have at a home furniture store.

Atelier creates the proper showroom for these items. From original pieces of jewelry to games to barware, Hutson has hand-selected items for her store and keeps the stock minimal to help ensure their uniqueness.

"Many of those items I will never replicate; I will replace that item with another item," Hutson said. "If you buy a handbag from me, you're not going to see that same handbag back on the shelf."

This is not the case for all the items offered at the store, she said, but specialty items, such as handmade bracelets and handcrafted Estonian bow ties, are one-of-a-kind.

The showroom is small, which Hutson likes. One long row of track lighting and a bright storefront window produce enough light for the entire store. Because it is only about 400 square feet, Hutson uses floating shelves to make use of vertical space.

"It's a small location with a lot of products," Hutson said. "I feel like we utilized space really well."

Hutson does not plan to be involved in the day-to-day operation of Atelier, seeing it more as a side project.

Instead, several family members -- her son, nieces and sister-in law -- will run the store as she continues to work in the family furniture business.

"I have very good people helping me," Hutson said.

On opening day, flanked by family, Hutson was enthusiastic for the future of Atelier, having spent months selecting what she thought were just the right products to carry.

"I tried to design the store around the way I like to shop. I always love unique gifts, and I've always enjoyed people thinking I put a lot of thought into that gift," Hutson said. "Something unique, special, something they've never seen before. That's what I'm trying to accomplish with Atelier."
