The Chicago-based retailer announced the closure because the store is "underperforming."

The Carbondale store is one of eight Montgomery Ward operates that will close in seven states. The company will continue operating 291 stores.
The Carbondale store, which opened in 1991, employs 73 people and occupied a space of 92,660 square feet.
Montgomery Ward operated a retail store in downtown Cape Girardeau from 1928 through Christmas Eve of 1981.
