A new reservation system has improved Amtrak's ability to guarantee seating and add extra equipment as necessary.

Occasionally, passengers have been asked to stand, or were not allowed to board because seats were not available, said Jack Hynes, railroad administrator for the Missouri Department of Transportation. "Reserve seating will eliminate these problems."

The reserved seating system went into effect last weekend.

Ridership on the St. Louis-Kansas City Amtrak corridor was up 19 percent during fiscal 1997, which ended June 30.
