Mercantile, which was listed as "Newcomer" to Fortune Magazine's top 500, is number 496 on the list to appear in the April 26 issue of Fortune Magazine. Mercantile ranks 24 among U.S. commercial banks in total assets.

Mercantile has grown fivefold in asset size from 1990 to 1998, said Thomas H. Jacobsen, chairman and chief executive officer of Mercantile.
Headquartered in St. Louis, Mercantile Bancorporation operates banks in nearly 500 sites throughout Missouri -- including Cape Girardeau -- Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Arkansas and Kentucky.
