Walgreen Co. chief executive Daniel Jorndt was named chairman of the drugstore chain's board last week, replacing Charles R. Walgreen III.
Jorndt, who began his career at the company in 1963 as a pharmacist, has been chief executive of the fast-growing nationwide chain since January 1998. Before that, he was president and chief operating officer.
Walgreen joined the company founded by his grandfather in 1952 as a stock clerk; he held various positions before becoming chairman of the board in 1976. He will remain a member of the board as chairman emeritus.
Walgreens operates 2,755 stores in 37 states and Puerto Rico, with fiscal 1998 sales of $15.3 billion.
