Lone Star Industries Inc., a maker of cement, crushed stone and other construction materials, reported that second-quarter net income was up 42 percent, topping analysts' expectations.
Lone Star, headquartered at Stamford, Conn., said the lates figures also halted discussions "with all parties who had expressed an interest in merging with, or acquiring the company."
Net income climbed to $17.3 million, or $1.26 a share, up from $12.1 million or 89 cents a share during the same period in 1995.
Revenue rose 17 percent, to $104.9 million, from $89.7 million a year ago.
The company attributed the earnings increase in part to an increase in demand for cement. Higher prices for ready-mixed concrete also contributed to improve profits during the quarter.
Lone Star Industries, which operates a facility in the 2500 block of South Sprigg, is expanding its facility here with a $9.7 million project that will provide three clinker storage silos. Each of the silos will be 120 feet tall and 70 feet in diameter, allowing for 40,000 tons of clinker material
