Home-based businesses are among the fastest-growing sections of the U.S. economy.
More than 47 million Americans work in a business operated from the home, and that number is expected to swell to 60 million by the year 2000.
A 1996 survey found that 56 percent of home businesses earned net revenue of less than $56,000; 24 percent earned between $50,000 and $99,000, and 20 percent earned more than $100,000.
Other findings during the survey: 37 percent of home-based businesses are owned by women, 25 percent of home businesses use the Internet and 43 percent left a previous job to start a home-based business.
