The awards, presented at the Dana Technical Resource Park in Ottawa Lake during the plant managers meeting were awarded to facilities that met certain environmental and safety criteria developed by Dana's Environmental Health and Safety Council.

To receive the honor, a Dana facility must have achieved at least an 80 percent regulatory compliance score on their most recent environmental audit (The local plan received 85 percent). Other criteria are that a plant have no air emissions or water discharged permit violations during the past two years; and, lost time frequency must be as good as the Bureau of Labor Statistics industry for the SIC (Standard Industry Code). The SIC code, which covers the Cape Girardeau facility, calls for an average of 7.5 percent annually. The Cape facility had a SIC score of 4.8 percent.
