"The workshop is designed to acquaint the small-business owner or operator with current management principles," said Rick Sparks, business and industry specialist with the University of Missouri Extension. "Topics will include new business start-up, buyout or franchising; financing a small business; record keeping, and others."

The workshop will be taught by Sparks and Buz Sutherland of the Small Business Development Center of Southeast Missouri State University.

Cost of the seminar is $20 per participant. Additional information is available by calling the University Extension Center in Perryville at 547-4504.

COLUMBIA Schnucks Markets Inc., headquartered in St. Louis, will build a 615,000-square-foot Super Center in the Forum Shopping Center at Columbia. It is expected to open in 1993.

The St. Louis grocery chain currently operates 59 stores in four states: Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Missouri. Forty-four of the stores are in Missouri, including one in Cape Girardeau.

Sears Optical is sponsoring an art contest for children in conjunction with the company's second Family Eye Health Month, a national eye care educational campaign.

Students in grades 3-5 may submit poster-sized drawings on the theme, "The Eyes Have It: What Good Vision Means to Me." The activity is being coordinated by teachers as part of a professionally developed curriculum distributed by Sears Optical. The contest is open, however, to all third- through fifth-graders, regardless of their school's curriculum.

Posters should be dropped off at the local Sears Optical Department, 2102 William, between March 1 and 15.

The winning entry will win a pair of eyeglasses for a family member.

The Small Business Development Center at Southeast Missouri State University will conduct sessions for area small-business persons and individuals planning business ventures. They will be held at Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, Dexter, and Perryville.

Gil Degenhardt will conduct the counseling sessions, which will last for approximately one hour each. There is no charge.

The Cape Girardeau sessions will be held at the Chamber of Commerce office, 601 N. Kingshighway, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 26. Persons may call 335-3312 for appointments.

Sikeston sessions are scheduled Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, 1 Industrial Drive. Call 471-2498 for appointments.

Dexter sessions will be held at Southern Savings and Loan Building, Highway 60, Feb. 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. Call 624-7458 for appointments.

Perryville sessions will be held Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Southeast Missouri Regional Planning, 1 West St. Joseph. Appointments are available by calling 547-8357.

Shelter Insurance Foundation will present a $1,000 scholarship to a Kelly High School graduate.

The scholarship for the Benton school will be sponsored and partially funded by local Shelter agent Joe Stucky. He has been with the firm since 1980, and has participated in the scholarship program for five years.

Sears 1992 annual spring catalog is being billed as "The World's Largest."

The new catalog has almost 1,600 pages of home fashions, apparel, hardware, automotive, appliances and other items.

John's Pharmacy, 2001 Independence, will sponsor a free blood glucose testing and blood pressure check Thursday at the pharmacy.

The tests will be conducted by the staff of the Southeast Missouri Hospital Fitness and Wellness Center.
