Total construction activity continues to rise in Missouri, reported the F.W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill, an authority on the construction market.
Total construction for July of 1993 was $419,752,000, up about eight percent from the $388,857,000 figure of July a year ago. Overall construction for the first seven months of the year was reported at $2.8 billion, from the $2.6 billion of a year ago.
Nonresidential construction in the state, which includes commercial, manufacturing, educational, motels, and other buildings not designed for shelter was reported at $1,055,753,000, 31 percent above the $803,452,000 total for the same period a year ago. Residential construction in the state was at $1,346,070,000 for the year, an 8 percent increase.
Nonbuilding construction, which includes streets, highways, bridges, river and harbor developments, airports and a few other projects, was reported at $406,712,000, down about 29 percent from last year's figures of $571,476,000.

The Cape Girardeau Area Vocational Technical School has added two new classes for area industry personnel.
A 30-hour OSHA Construction Safety and Health Standards class will meet for 10 weeks starting Sept. 29. The course carries 3 continuing education credits. Emphasis will be on job site practices, inspections and record keeping.
Also offered will be a one and a half day seminar in Hydraulics and Pneumatics, to be presented by Air Specialists Inc. The class will meet Oct. 19 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Oct. 20 for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The seminar will cover the selection, use, operation and maintenance of hydraulic, air and vacuum equipment.

Schnucks Markets has been named "Retailer of the Year" in the non-video specialty store category by the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA).
Winners are selected by VSDA's Manufacturers Advisory committee via write-in vote, and are picked for excellence in areas such as communication with manufacturers and distributors, stocking and in-store displays.

Chief administrative law judge Jack Knowlan, of the Division of Workers Compensation will be speaker for the Cape Girardeau County Legal Secretaries Association meeting to be held Sept. 9 at the Lichtenegger, Payne & Weiss Law Firm office in Jackson.

Shoney's, Inc. reported record revenues for the third quarter and a 19 percent increase in earnings per share for the first three quarters of fiscal year 1993.
Revenues during the third quarter increased seven percent, to $274,133,000, from $257,142,000 during the same period of 1992. Earnings per share for the quarter were up 12 per cent, to 38 cents, compared with 34 cents for the same quarter a year ago.
Revenues for the first three quarters of the year were $854,556,000, up from $811,271,000 for the same period of 1992. Earnings per share for the first three quarters were $1.02, up from 86 cents during the same period of 1992.
Shoney's, headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., opened 95 restaurants during the first three quarters. The company has 1,852 restaurants in 36 states, including a Shoney's at Cape Girardeau.

Robert N. Etherton, an Edward D. Jones & Co. investment representative in Cape Girardeau, will host a live satellite broadcast concerning the new tax legislation which was signed by President Clinton last month.
The program, "Answers for America: How the Deficit Reduction Plan Impacts You," will be held at Etherton's 215 N. Sprigg Sept. 15.
The interactive broadcast will focus on the tax act's ramifications for individuals and small businesses.
