__CAPE SCHOOL BOARD RECEIVES STATE AWARD__
For the second consecutive year, the Cape Girardeau School Board earned the Governance Team Award from the Missouri School Boards' Association. The recognition, formerly known as the Leadership Team Award, allows the MSA to recognize school boards and their superintendents for commitment to improvement through ongoing professional development, regional and statewide leadership and participation in legislative advocacy for public schools and the students they serve, according to the association's website. Of Missouri's 520 school districts, 22 will receive the award this year, Cape Girardeau superintendent James Welker said. It will be presented during the MSBA Leadership Summit, set for June 6 and 7 at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, Missouri.

__NEW VISITOR CENTER OPENS AT MINGO__
PUXICO, Mo. -- Mingo National Wildlife Refuge's new 11,500-square-foot visitor center opened May 12. The previous center was built in 1975 and had numerous problems, necessitating either a major overhaul or construction of a new building, said Ben Mense, refuge manager. The new building was designed to be energy-efficient and has 6,000 square feet of public space, with the rest devoted to offices and storage. The public area includes all-new displays, a classroom for up to 75 people, a gift shop, book store, theater room and a viewing room that overlooks Rockhouse Marsh. There is also an educational trail adjacent to the new building.

Pagoda Gardens, 329 S. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, closed May 31. Sam Prasanphanich opened Pagoda Gardens in November 1981 with his business partner, Jay Santi. After 32 years of work, Prasanphanich noticed business was slowing and, having reached retirement age, decided to close the business at the end of May.

__FOOD BANK REOPENS IN SIKESTON__
SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Southeast Missouri Food Bank relocated to a 64,000-square-foot distribution center in Sikeston, the Sikeston Standard Democrat reported. The move provides the food bank room to expand hunger-relief services for residents in a 16-county service area surrounding Sikeston. The distribution center first opened on Keystone Drive in Sikeston, then moved to Nash Road in Cape Girardeau in 2007. In June 2012, the food bank purchased the building at 600 State Highway H in Sikeston. The building has since undergone an estimated $1.7 million in renovations and improvements, including the installation of coolers and freezers with combined storage capacity of 4,700 square feet, more than twice that of the food bank's former location in Cape Girardeau. The purchase and renovations were made possible with the support of Missouri Foundation for Health and many other donors.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Holiday Inn Express & Suites is now open at 115 Hospitality Drive in Sikeston. The hotel includes 73 guest rooms, 18 of which are suites, as well as an indoor pool, fitness room, meeting area and complimentary breakfast. Catering and room service will be provided by Colton's Steak House, which is next to the hotel. Paul Williams owns the hotel and Scott Timmington and Spencer Schram are co-owners. __LOCAL OWNERS OPEN KENNETT CINEMA__
KENNETT, Mo. -- After four years and a new facelift, the Kennett movie theater reopened on May 30, the Daily Dunklin Democrat reported. In October 2012, two years after the AMC closed the doors of the theater, Jill and Will Mobley, along with friends Glenda and Dr. Dave Jain, purchased the building. Glenda said the old building was not up to code, so practically everything had to be replaced, including the wiring, flooring and ceilings.

__ABC OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AWARDED MANAGEMENT CONTRACT__
The management contract for the Jackson License Office was awarded to ABC of Southeast Missouri LLC in Sikeston, Missouri, according to a news release from the Missouri Department of Revenue. The contract was awarded by the Office of Administration in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Revenue. All license office contracts in the state are awarded through a competitive bid process, the release said. The license office will remain at its location at 125 E. Main St. in Jackson. ABC of Southeast Missouri's contract includes an annual commitment to return 7.75 percent of future processing fees to the state, which is approximately $15,550, according to the release.

The Gathering Place sells home decor items, old tools, household goods, books and more.
