STE. GENEVIEVE -- ALCO-Duckwall officials in Abilene, Kan., have announced that their new ALCO Discount Store in The Plaza Ste. Genevieve will open May 21.
Construction on the long-awaited successor to the closed GrandPa's store in Ste. Genevieve is nearly complete. The store is locating in the building that formerly housed Country Mart before Country Mart moved to the other end of the plaza.
The new store will employ about 30 workers. The store manager is Bill Morris from North Dakota.
GrandPa's was the city's first and only discount department store when it closed in early 2000.
ALCO-Duckwall President Glen Shank said he is optimistic about Ste. Genevieve.
"We are very confident that the new ALCO store's selections, quality and prices will meet the needs of shoppers in Ste. Genevieve and the surrounding trade area," he said.
ALCO will offer full-line general merchandise selections at discount prices. The store will sell clothing, shoes, jewelry, non-prescription medicines, beauty aids, candy, house wares, appliances, china and glassware.
Also, stereos, TVs, CDs, cameras, stationery, greeting cards, school supplies, furniture, hardware, tools, paint, garden supplies, toys, sporting goods, pet supplies, automotive supplies, bedding, curtains, shades and crafts.
Merchandise will be supplied to the store from ALCO's distribution center in Abilene, Kan.
ALCO Discount Stores represent a division of the 100-year-old Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc. There are currently 176 ALCO stores serving customers in 21 states in the Midwest and West.
