River continues to drop, but more heavy rain coming
Posted Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 4:30 PM
After remaining above major flood stage for several days, the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is poised to start dropping in earnest. The current forecast shows the river retreating below flood stage (32 feet) on May 28.
However, this forecast doesn't take into account much of the heavy rain that is projected to arrive across the Midwest through the next week. The charts are depicting copious rainfall totals for the next seven days over a large swath of the Mississippi and Missouri River watersheds upstream from Cape.
If this rain does come, the river will likely remain uncomfortably high for quite some time.
