Welcome to April: Moderate risk of severe storms; wind advisory; frost
We've got it all:
- Moderate risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon capable of tornadoes, high winds, and hail
- Wind Advisory for today calling for high winds outside of the thunderstorms
- Cold air bringing multiple chances for frosts or freezes starting tonight and lasting through the week
Cape Girardeau is right on the line between a Moderate Risk of severe storms (to the southeast) and an Enhanced Risk (to the northwest). Regardless of the exact risk zones, we face uncomfortably lofty probabilities for tornadoes, high winds, and large hail early this afternoon.
The sudden warmup this morning -- Cape has zoomed to 69°F -- is setting the stage for the storm outbreak around 3-5 PM this afternoon. In the meantime, a Wind Advisory is in effect for wind gusts in the 35-45 mph range (the Cape airport has already recorded a 35 mph gust).
Once the storms roll through, a cold front will return us back to late winter. Lows in the 30s tonight and tomorrow night will bring chances of frost, and then even colder temperatures in the 20s Friday night could yield a freeze. There's also an outside shot at snow/sleet/whatever Friday evening, but I'm not holding my breath on that.
