Number of times the "F" word appears in the forecast: three
The forecast for Cape Girardeau keeps getting uglier. Just about every kind of thing that can come from the sky is mentioned in the current forecast: lightning, rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow.
I don't see tornadoes listed, but the "F" word -- freezing rain -- is almost as scary, and it appears no less than three times in the forecast.
After we see unseasonable warmth on Wednesday, a cold front will bring a drastic change:
WEDNESDAY: PARTLY SUNNY WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS. HIGHS IN THE MID 60S. SOUTHWEST WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION 20 PERCENT.
THURSDAY: CLOUDY. A CHANCE OF RAIN IN THE MORNING THEN RAIN AND SLEET LIKELY...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH FREEZING RAIN IN THE AFTERNOON. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 30S. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION 70 PERCENT.
THURSDAY NIGHT: SLEET...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH RAIN FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW IN THE EVENING...THEN SNOW AND SLEET LIKELY AFTER MIDNIGHT. LOWS IN THE MID 20S. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION 60 PERCENT.
FRIDAY: CLOUDY...SNOW POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SLEET IN THE MORNING...THEN A CHANCE OF SNOW IN THE AFTERNOON. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 20S. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION 70 PERCENT.
FRIDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY. A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF LIGHT SNOW IN THE EVENING. LOWS AROUND 16.
SATURDAY: PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE MID 20S.
SATURDAY NIGHT: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW. LOWS AROUND 17.
SUNDAY: MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A 40 PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW POSSIBLY MIXED WITH FREEZING RAIN. HIGHS IN THE MID 20S.
A bulletin from the National Weather Service this morning advises:
WHILE IT IS STILL TOO SOON TO FORECAST SPECIFIC AMOUNTS GIVEN THE EXPECTED TRANSITIONAL NATURE OF THE PRECIPITATION...CONFIDENCE IS INCREASING IN OUR AREA SEEING A RESPECTABLE AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION ACCUMULATION. THIS WILL LIKELY TRANSLATE INTO WINTER WEATHER IMPACTS OVERNIGHT THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.
Meanwhile, a second system could bring additional winter weather on Sunday, although it appears weaker than the first.
It may be too early to make any kind of definitive forecast, but I'm going to go out on a limb and make this declaration: the BREAD index will reach extreme levels.
