Oh joy, we've been upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning
The National Weather Service in Paducah has upgraded the entire area to an Excessive Heat Warning through Saturday evening.
Earlier this morning, the forecasters were debating about whether to issue a warning or just stick with a run-of-the-mill Heat Advisory. The heat is going to be bad, but perhaps not quite bad enough to meet the strict definition of a Heat Warning (four consecutive days with heat indices above 105).
However, the overnight lows are going to be ridiculously hot (above 75) for several days, which will add more bite to this heat wave.
It appears the Paducah forecasters may also have been influenced by "peer pressure" as a large chunk of the Midwest has now been upgraded to Heat Warnings. We wouldn't want to get left out of the "Burnaclysm" or "Heatpocalypse" or "Sunapalooza" or whatever the Twittersphere decides to call this thing.
The hottest day of the week appears to be Thursday with the heat index approaching 110 at Cape Girardeau. By Sunday, the air temperature will only reach the mid-90s, a real cold snap.
