Important Bills Making Legislative Progress
The following four House bills were reported to the Senate this week:
A bill that will give adequate time for caseworkers to complete a child abuse investigation was reported to the Senate. House Bill 1092 will not, however, prevent an emergency removal of an endangered child. It changes the time period in which the Children's Division within the Department of Social Services must complete a child abuse or neglect investigation from within 30 days to within 30 business days unless good cause for failure is documented.
Two photo ID bills, HB 1073 and HJR 47, passed the House this week. The subject of requiring photo identification continues to be hotly debated. I must say however, it never ceases to amaze me that the very legislators opposed to these bills have themselves been required to present photo ID in a variety of situations, such as opening a bank account; I assume without a peep of complaint! This requirement is a simple, common sense anti-fraud measure.
The five detailed provisions of the House Bill 1073 are too lengthy to place in this newsletter so I encourage you to use the link above and read those for yourself.
Another perfected bill, House Bill 1268, will require the individual income tax rate brackets to be adjusted annually for inflation. The annual adjustment will be measured by the Federal Consumer Price Index. It would take effect with the 2015 tax year.
