  • One of the most sensible and well written posts or yours I think I've ever had the priviledge of reading. Well done. It's nice to read something serious every once in a while. Couldn't agree more with you.

  • Since the answer to research anything is to 'form a committee', I suggest that Brad becomes head of the committee to research the benefits of bringing a casino to Cape!

  • I feel the same about committees as I did about "group projects" when I was in school. Hate them.

It will be interesting to see how the state gaming board (fancy word for committee) actually decides which location will be awarded the license. I'm suuuuuurree it will be a completely non-partisan decision....

    Thanks for reading.

  • Personally, I'm mixed on the issue. If people shift their entertainment dollars away from locally owned businesses, that could offset the benefits of additional tourism this attraction could generate.

I am glad it is being pursued as an option, and I agree with Hollerbach's us&them logic - but I don't think this thing is all rainbows and sunshine either.

  • Any time you are trying to progress and move forward it's not all going to be rainbows and sunshine that is part of it sure does beat "status quoa". We have to move forward and get something big in to Cape Girardeau we are kind of in a rut right now, other communities are moving forward and we should too.

  • Sin pays! Ask any preacher. Where would he be without it. Ask the tax man. Think of all that lovely revenue. Think of the damned fool dropping his dollars at a casino. Just save him from wasting them elsewhere.

In Downtown Cape, you say. Have you taken into consideration the parking problem? Brad was all over that a short time ago.

  • If a casino was to be located in Cape, maybe the gubner would award a grant to start a card and chip factory.

  • Well thought-out, Brad!

We enjoyed the casino in St. Charles for several years (and still go there now and then); sometimes we just went there to enjoy the marvelous buffet ... was certainly a boost for that city, and certainly didn't seem to have hurt it's downtown area businesses ... as some predicted it might.

Don't know for sure, but the casino didn't seem to have raised the crime rate. In fact, none of the dire predictions bandied about before it was voted in seemed to have come true, at least not appreciably.

  • There are a lot of "them factors" about this topic. I think, however, the prospective casino would only enhance the city's tourist trade and create more, much needed jobs. Heaven knows, we've lost too many jobs in this area during the economic dip.
