In the aftermath of Southeast Missouri State's latest round of NCAA violations, the University announced at a press conference yesterday that it is honoring its rich and storied history of penalties and fines from that organization by giving Rowdy the Redhawk an assistant mascot. The new mascot -- which has been christened 'NCAA Nellie' by the University -- is loosely based on the NCAA logo and will accompany Rowdy to all Southeast events. Tito Allen Smithee, University Vice President of Mascot Affairs, revealed that "Nellie's primary purpose will be to chase Rowdy around during an event and attempt to pummel him whenever possible." "We see him very much like the Cato character in the Pink Panther movies," Smithee said. "Nellie might pop out of a manhole or rappel down from the catwalks of the Show Me Center or jump out from behind a bush. Nellie will definitely keep the audience and especially Rowdy on their toes." The University also announced that it will no longer refer to sanctions by the NCAA as "penalties," but instead call them "life lessons." Rowdy the Redhawk, who attended the press conference looking visibly nervous, had no comment.
