DC Travels Part 2 -- Newseum and Arlington
Last week when I was in Washington DC with my wife, we went to the Newseum which is dedicated to all things related to news and news-gathering techniques.
It's the newest addition to the museum community in Washington having been open only about 6 months. This is a must-visit for someone who has worked in newspapers most of his career.
We'd been at the museum for about an hour, when the fire alarm went off. The staff ushered everyone out the front doors. While we were waiting on the sidewalk, I couldn't help noticing two government-issue black Suburbans do a U-turns on Pennsylvania Avenue and park right in front of the museum.
In short order, a woman was ushered into one of the vehicles by a security detail and whisked away. Not sure who she was, but it was definitely not Michelle Obama.
And speaking of Obama, while we were at the Newseum we saw on a digital newswire display in the main lobby that Barack Obama was going to be visiting the White House for the first time as President-elect that afternoon.
I know many people in this area wouldn't cross the street to see Obama, but this was kind of historic. How often would we be in DC to catch a glimpse of the first African-American President-elect motorcade on his first visit to the White House?
We made it to the motorcade route about 5 minutes before the fleet of limos, SUVs, motorcycles and one bus went roaring by. You can think what you want about Obama, but he was not only punctual for his 2 pm meeting with President Bush, he was actually 10 minutes early.
The next day was Veteran's day.
My wife had to work so I made a solo pilgrimage out to Arlington National Cemetery. It was a crisp and sunny morning. Field artillery performed the 21 gun salute during the morning ceremony. It was impressive. Vice President Cheney spoke at the services.
Arlington is both an incredibly beautiful and incredibly sad place. The tens of thousands of headstones silently remind you that freedom is never free.
