Old McKendree Chapel

Posted Friday, September 24, 2010, at 9:15 AM

G.D. Fronabarger took this picture of an outdoor service at Old McKendree Chapel near Jackson, Mo.

Southeast Missourian, Aug. 8, 1955:

Youth from the Cape Girardeau District of the Methodist Church assembled Sunday afternoon at Methodism's shrine, Old McKendree Church, northwest of the city, and engaged in a program of worship and recreation. Against the ancient church background, Bill Spencer of Benton led a portion of the youth fellowship crowd in group singing.

  • Old McKendree Chapel was one of the places I used to ride to on my bicycle when I was a kid, so I stop by there when I visit Cape to recycle (pun intended) old memories.

On my last trip, I stepped inside to shoot photos of the interior.

When I turned to leave, I couldn't open the door. I thought this might have been some kind of Methodist recruitment plot to keep you once they had you trapped inside the chapel.

Follow the link to see how it turned out and to see some interesting factoids about the chapel.

P.S. the caretaker sent me a message recently saying that he fixed it so nobody else will get trapped like I was.
