Ice skating at Capaha Lagoon

Posted Friday, January 29, 2010, at 6:31 AM

There was a time when Cape Girardeans looked forward to winter and freezing temperatures so they could go ice skating on the lagoon at Capaha Park, as seen in these pictures taken by G.D. Fronabarger in 1961.

This activity is not permitted today.

Aerators are now used to control algae in the summer and ice skaters in the winter.

  • Brings back memories as a kid in the 1940's.

Nowadays some people are determined to take the joy out of everything.

  • more like lawyers and lawsuits taking the fun out of everything. Bet you $100 nobody sued the city when their kid fell down and busted something back in the 50, 60, or even 70's. But now parks are even taking slides and some other equipment out to not be sued.

  • In 1968, folks ignored DANGER signs and open water to walk on the ice.

  • Anybody check the Duck pond for ice today? As explained, due to aerators ice doesn't form like it used to. Hasn't got anything to do with the fictional "global warming" scam.

  • johnboy25.....you are right on. I was a teenager in the '50s and there were very few lawsuits about anything. I don't ever remember anyone getting sued over a kid getting hurt. Oh my, if Dad and Mom had only known, they could have gotten filthy rich as a result of me. On the other hand, they could have been sued many times for things that I was involved in. Aah, those were the good old days.

    ....and so it goes~~
