Ethical High School Juniors Wanted
Better Business Bureau (BBB) Cape Girardeau is now accepting applicants for this year’s “Student of Ethics Award.” The SOE award is a $2,500 college or trade school scholarship that recognizes high school students who demonstrate high ethics through leadership, community service, personal integrity and academic achievement.
This year, the SOE awards will be presented by region at BBB TORCH Award luncheons in the fall. BBB will pay for each winner to attend the event and will provide two additional tickets for the student’s parents or guests. John Beal, Wren Homes and Drury Hotels are sponsoring the Student of Ethics Awards this year.
Students are asked to submit an application that includes academic, leadership and service achievements as well as a 300-word essay and a letter of recommendation. A panel of independent judges will choose the winners, considering each student’s leadership qualities, academic performance, character and essay.
Last year, Jamie Hodge was one of four young scholars to receive the award out of 345 applicants across the St. Louis, Columbia and Cape Girardeau regions. By volunteering with the Special Olympics, Vacation Bible School and Family of Christian Students, Hodge has put her ethical beliefs and scholarship into action.
In her application she states, “A strong decision-making process aids us when faced with life’s ethical decisions. These decisions not only form our personal character, but also guide the success of our free society. We must practice making small ethical decisions because they gradually lead to paramount decisions.”
Applications are due by June 2, 2017. More information is available online or by calling Chris Thetford, BBB Director of Communications, at (314) 645-3300 or in Cape Girardeau, Joey Keys at (573)803-3190.
