Margie's Day Out

Posted Monday, November 8, 2010, at 7:25 PM

I meant to attend Petstock this past Saturday at the 4-H building in Arena Park. I didn't count on sleeping so long after working Friday night. When Margie and I showed up, all were gone. Mea Culpa! Shelter Alliance is a group I strongly support; Debi Baker is someone who gets things done for a lot of people and animals.

I took Margie with me not because she is up for adoption (she is not) but Debi gave her to me the summer of '09 after she had been found in a closed dumpster behind a Wal-Mart. Margie was about 7-8 weeks old at the time. We have no idea of her breeding but now more than a year later, I am calling her a Beagle/Cairn Terrier mix: she has Beagle ears and a spotted tummy with a wire coat. Here is a definition of Cairn Terrier: a small terrier of a breed with short legs, a longish body, and a shaggy coat. [ORIGIN: perhaps so named from being used to hunt among cairns.]. Her legs are not really very short, so they may come from the Beagle side. Beagle Margie w/friends

So, we went to Safe Harbor. Alice met Margie, whom she had only seen in photos; she was surprised at how small she is (17# of muscle). "Look bigger in your pictures!" Margie hung out with us as we finished feeding, watering and scooping for the cats in the Big House at Safe Harbor. The patio is almost done, the new dog building has been started thanks to all who turned out for our first annual Blues Jam for Safe Harbor at Port Cape. Looking good. Margie had no trouble with the cats and kittens; some of them weren't too sure about her.

Next, we went to Panera. I let Margie sleep in the car while I had some supper. Taking dogs to different places with the expectation they will behave well is good for them. It helps make them think as well as give them socialization outside their normal comfort zone. Margie had no problem sleeping while I was eating. We went for a walk before going to Petco.

There, too, she got to meet other people, other dogs. Margie is a people dog - her tail becomes a rotor when she sees a new person to meet. For the most part, they are happy to meet her, too! We walked through, getting some dog food and beds for the wee dogs at the Sanctuary in anticipation of the cold weather, yes, we will eventually have.

As I drove home, Margie fell asleep on my arm. No, it is not wise to drive with a dog in your lap; I did have a carrier but chose to enjoy her with me instead. Bad mom. Have you met Margie? You will understand.

I hope you all have a great week. I plan to write more than once a week but you know how plans can go awry. Be good to your pets, volunteer when and where you can and be grateful for each day you have.
