Fostering Here and There
This Saturday is the first Saturday of the month, which means Fostering Hope is featured at Petco along with the Caruthersville Humane Society. Now, there is a dynamic group of animal welfare people struggling against great odds to rescue and re-home at risk animals, mostly dogs. Check out Petco this Saturday between 1-4 PM - the earlier, the better, especially if you are looking to adopt a new canine family member. Look for the people wearing the Fostering Hope buttons. If you want one, the shop is online at http://www.zazzle.com/BobbieRae. Any and all proceeds go to Fostering Hope to support our foster families. Thanks!
Silverwalk fosters dogs as well as rescuing and re-homing them. Currently, there are two Black and Tan Coonhounds here - Bailey and Winston - both being fostered for American Black and Tan Coonhound Rescue. Winston, right now as I write, is in his crate, booming his dissatisfaction at not being outside with Scout and other members of the pack. I say booming as this boy could be a histrionic opera tenor, though not necessarily on key. Both he and Bailey can be noisy but usually, when they are, it is because I have left, am leaving, out of sight, you get the drift. They are very, very oriented to their people - which at this point in time is me, myself and I. Neither has been here very long - Winston not even a week and Bailey about a month. Today, Bailey, she of the sweet personality and not quite empty mind, started her heart worm treatments. The plan is for me to pick her up tomorrow afternoon.
Oxford, on the other hand, is a long time foster for PAWS in Marion, AR. He is a wonderful older Beagle boy, not very noisy at all, not even when he is hungry or thirsty. When that occurs, he will sit and LOOK at me or rattle his paw in the empty water bowl as if to say, "Hey, Mom, I need some water here!" He loves his walks though we don't tell him we are now going home as he wants to keep on walking. He has persistent skin issues, is on thyroid meds, a fish/potato kibble, weekly baths and stills smells like yeast. Oxford is just my "Yeasty Boy." All three of these dogs need homes - Bailey and Winston need to go through Jayne at ABTCR but I am able to adopt out Oxford for PAWS. Send us an email for them!
Here is a photo of Lady Bird, a FORMER Silverwalk foster for PAWS who is now being fostered in another rescue in Kennebunkport, ME! She looks so happy and I am so happy for her - I love this dog! So, you see, if fostering in one location doesn't work and a dog isn't finding a home, another location may be just the ticket. We made a lot of progress with Lady Bird while she was here but she was getting few hits and needed different exposure. Because I valued Lady Bird's opinion so highly, when she immediately went up to a potential adopter for petting, then let her son poke her in the face without flinching, I knew these people were right to adopt a Silverwalk dog! PAWS collaborates with Lucky Pup Rescue in ME, so off Lady Bird went. She is now living with one large male dog and two cats who avoid her. She plays with her male dog companion, has visited the beach and gone on walks with her foster family. Fostering can be fun! Plus, the dogs in foster hopefully are in a smaller, more one on one environment than in a shelter or here at Silverwalk.
