Memorial Day - human and canine
Today is Memorial Day. I personally am remembering my father and his brothers who all served and survived WWII, my brother who serves as a civilian with DOD (Dept. of Defense) and all those who have given their lives and/or had them extremely altered while answering their call to duty in defense of our country. I have not always agreed with the policies of war in which our country has engaged - I grew up with Vietnam - but have always honored and respected those who served, whether by choice or by draft.
I hope a policy has changed in these more recent wars. To my understanding, the service dogs in Vietnam, who often saved the lives of multiple servicemen and women, for the most part were left in country as "expendable." Those whose lives they saved I am sure would beg to differ. If service dogs are still being used in current wars, I hope they are well treated and properly retired should they survive. If anyone knows the current policy and its effect, please let me know.
Memorial Day - the real day is May 30. Today is more convenient for a 3 day holiday weekend. We lose much by making things too convenient. Sorry, just a small soap box.
