  • 20 is alot of dogs, and how expensive that must be. I know I pop about 400 a month into these guys. It's like having a house payment. I rescued collies for 8 years and what we have are the ones who didn't get adopted. They are either seniors, have chronic illnesses and then Grace was the pit bait dog, so she's got previous injuries (requires alot of vet care)

We'll probably get back to rescue, but my numbers need to go down first. I'm too old for all this grooming lol

I wanted to add to your puppy mill story. I took a few puppymill (seniors) dogs and probably still would. They were tiny and cute, a change of pace for me :)

I thought I knew all about what went on in puppymills and how bad they were. I had no idea until I started taking those dogs. OMG, They were skin and bone, sick, most missing front teeth from being debarked with a pipe, scared.

It was horrible. A friend and I got 5 chis from a giveaway one time. One died the day they arrived, another a few days later from complications due to pneumonia. One pup was missing a back leg because they didn't have shelter at the mill, so when it rained and froze, the owner or pup's mom would go to pick it up and all the legs didn't come up with the pup :(

That pup did get adopted and her new mom said "She might only have 3 legs, but she runs like she's got 6!" lol

It is really horrendous and it needs to be stopped. We need better laws regarding the care of the dogs and we need to ENFORCE them.

What was most eye opening for me was when I went to apply for my rescue license. I had to submit an action plan for exercising these guys, I had to have an attending veterinarian, microchip them and agree to take them back for 2 years after the adoption (although we do it for the life of the dog for any reason), I had to have isolation procedures, and the dogs' enviroment has a range of temps it has to be,

It was lengthy. But, if I were a breeder, seemed like anything goes.

    Something was backwards about that....
