ESSEX -- Ricky L. Leutert, 39, of Qulin, was electrocuted Thursday while working on power lines. According to David Cooper, manager of the Stoddard County Ambulance District, they received an emergency call at 10:20 a.m. reporting a Union Electric worker had been electrocuted on County Road 732 one and one-half miles east of Highway 153, near Essex...

There appears to be little to no activity occurring on a platform situated in the middle of the Mississippi River. However, a handful of workers are performing highly-complicated tests to ensure the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge doesn't fall down if an earthquake ever occurs...

A fund-raiser for the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today Aug. 28 at Sam's, 232 Shirley Drive. Jeannie Heise, a nurse at Cape Girardeau Central High School, will be selling the salad dressing she makes. A portion of the proceeds will go to NASV, which serves children who have been sexually abused and adults who have been sexually assaulted. Funds also will be raised through the selling of snow cones and a car wash...

Southeast Missouri State University had cause to celebrate this past week. First-day enrollment numbers climbed 4.3 percent over a year ago to 8,113 students. That's an accomplishment considering the stiff competition for college-bound students. The university is hoping the numbers continue to grow with an additional 600 to 800 more students by the official enrollment date four weeks into the semester. Enrollment is growing both on campus and at outlying education centers...

The Cape Girardeau School District has adopted a new early dismissal plan as a way to take out the guesswork for parents. The district's new superintendent, Dr. Dan Steska, plans to notify parents of heat-related dismissals the day before. His decision will be based on forecasts from the National Weather Service...
