Cairo's schools adequate; city is overtaxed

To the editor:

I grew up in Cairo, Ill., and graduated from Cairo High School in 1960. The schools you mention in your Jan. 25 article concerning the school bond issue are not over 100 years old. In fact, two of them are under 50 years old, Emerson and Bennett. My mother still lives in Cairo, and her taxes are exorbitant. The citizens of that town are way overtaxed now and certainly don't need any more. And as for new schools, the ones they currently have are quite adequate. New schools will not increase the students' test scores. Only more help from the parents will accomplish that.
