Concerns with older drivers

There has been some discussion about testing older drivers before renewing their licenses. I know some older drivers are adamant about being singled out and throw in "what about the younger drivers?"

I have had some experience in this issue when dealing with my father. My dad started being a danger to other drivers due to his medical history. He fought me tooth and nail about what he called his "right" to drive. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

I talked with his family doctor and they sent him for testing by a occupational therapist at a local hospital. She recommended several restrictions on his license and notified the state. His restrictions were no interstate driving, no nighttime driving and a 20-mile radius.

They took his license due to him not obeying those restrictions. He went to another doctor and got them back after a year before another doctor notified the state about his medical problems. They included black outs and mini-strokes.

I hated to do that, but I had to think of the other drivers out there. I know there will be a time when it is best for me to quit driving, and I fully agree with retesting everyone at certain ages. If you have no health issues and are capable of driving, then you should. But please think of the other drivers out there also. Talk to your families and listen to them when they voice their concerns over your driving.
