Shop local

It's Thanksgiving Week. After all the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and of course, football, many will turn their attention to Christmas and the Black Friday deals.

There's something about shopping the day after Thanksgiving that puts you in the holiday spirit. Even those who don't particularly enjoy hours of shopping can get wrapped up in the festive atmosphere.

As you prepare your gift list, there's one thing we hope you consider: shopping local.

Local businesses play a vital role in our economy. They provide jobs, purchase business-related items, pay taxes, support local charities and otherwise invest in the community. They are the engine that stimulates the local economy and their effect is significant.

Yes, there are national economic challenges, and locally we are not exempt. Still, local business leaders have helped Southeast Missouri weather the storm. Their commitment, ingenuity and expertise make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Today's Perspectives page has several guest columns from local Chamber of Commerce executives. Each has a unique perspective on the benefits of shopping local. As Brian Gerau, executive director of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, wrote, it's important to think locally when shopping.

May we be one of the first to wish you a Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday season. And have fun in the coming days of local shopping.
