Sept. 11, 2001

It's been 11 years, yet the images and sounds from Sept. 11, 2001, are just as horrifying. Planes flying into the twin towers and Pentagon. A crater left in a field in Pennsylvania. Smoke-filled air, debris and people jumping from buildings. These images are forever etched in our memories.

For many Americans it started as a normal Tuesday morning, but lives were forever changed. Hijackers flew three planes into buildings. A fourth plane was stopped from hitting the Capitol thanks to the heroes aboard United Airlines Flight 93.

As the country faced this evil known as terrorism, Americans responded in an amazing way. Emergency personnel and volunteers rescued many trapped in burning buildings. People gave their money and blood and offered their prayers and other support. In the world of politics, it didn't matter what side of the aisle you were on. We were united.

Americans face a number of challenges. However, we pause to remember those killed 11 years ago today.

In Scripture we read: "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13)

Today we remember those who perished, including heroes who died while saving others. There are countless stories that represent this love.

We also honor those who have died while fighting to preserve our freedoms, and thank the ones who continue to serve in our country's armed forces.

We offer a prayer for families who lost loved ones, and solemnly remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
