Building not endangered

Recently the Historic Preservation Commission of Cape Girardeau released a list of most endangered buildings. The purpose of the list was to bring attention to buildings either in disrepair or otherwise disused. Included on this list was the B'nai Israel synagogue on South Main Street. The reason for including this building was the understanding by commission members and staff that the building was not currently occupied. We have been informed by the owner that the building is, in fact, currently leased and occupied by a tenant using the building for a commercial purpose; the owner further states that he believes that the building is "one of the least endangered buildings in downtown" Cape Girardeau.

The commission regrets the error.
