I've been crossing my fingers for a rerun theatre. Saturday morning cartoons, 1980s blockbusters, dollar days, local productions, community fundraisers!

A girl can still hope, eh?

Sad to see it go but had many good memories there.

Well, it's a shame if it's true. It held such promise, too. Somebody dropped that ball. So many great memories there for so many people, including myself. I wonder if the marquee and anything else inside can be saved?

Is this the latest victim of the SEMO blob? If so, how much more will the Cape property tax payers now be asked to absorb?

Who are the owners and how can they be contacted? or is it the city of Cape Girardeau City?

When was the Esquire last opened for business? The owners obviously let the place fall into total disrepair, therefore it is way too expensive to remodel it and bring it in compliance with city building codes and ADA requirements. It is sad to drive down Broadway and see how "seedy" it looks. About the only thing to bring people back downtown again would be Walmart and other big box stores.

Good question, travellin man. What was the last movie shown there? Or at the Rialto? And I agree...Broadway looks seedy, but at least some businesses are trying to spruce things up. It's just not enough. When I think of the possibilities that the Esquire could have been made into...such a shame. Sad to think the owners let it go like that. Of course, I'm sure money was a huge factor. Too bad I'm not wealthy. I have some good ideas, too.

If you think it is such a precious property, then purchase it yourself. People complain about how the city should do this and that. It is private property along Broadway and people can do what they want or not want with their buildings. Its a shame but its reality. If SEMO purchases the property and clears it, then so be it. Its better than a rotting building.

Longtime: Right on brother (sister)! This property galls me every time I drive down Broadway. If all you do-gooders would put together a fund of about a million dollars, we could renew it to its original splendor. If you don't want to do that, you need to be quiet. The Broadway Theater across the street should be next.

I remember when it first opened right after WWII with "Blue Skies" starring Fred Astaire if memory serves. Rialto gone, Esquire gone, Broadway gone, Orphreum gone. The only thing left are to horrible mall theaters with screen no bigger than some home screens. Sometimes time improves nothing.
