Seat belts serve special interests

To the editor:

Paul Cohen is right in his letter about seat belts, but he didn't go far enough. What nobody seems to want to talk about is why we have a seat-belt law in the first place. The reason is the insurance companies and the seat-belt manufacturers. The insurance companies want these kind of laws so it will decrease the amount paid out in accidents. And the seat belt manufacturers want the law for more profit. The politicians that pass the laws also benefit, I am sure.
