Beware of too many degrees

Regarding the Jan. 27 article "Swingle's books to stay on county website," one sentence particularly attracted this reader: "Presiding Commissioner Gerald Jones, reminding everyone present his three college degrees included a history major focused on the Civil War, said the books reflected an accurate portrayal of events in Cape Girardeau's history."

The presiding commissioner should be cautioned against acquiring more degrees. I have seven, including a master's of law in law and government from American University's Washington College of Law. I learned in the last election that Southeast Missouri residents resent a fellow resident expending the time, energy, money and intellect to achieve seven. The fact that our economy is in recession-depression was of little moment.
