More awareness needed about NF

To the editor:

May is NF Awareness Month. When my sister was 9 months old, she was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that can cause tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. It can also cause blindness, deafness and learning difficulties as well as disfigurement.

In my perspective, more people should be educated about neurofibromatosis, because anyone could be diagnosed with it. My family and I have made a commitment to my sister, the NF Foundation and others with the disorder to help raise awareness.

My sister is a very lively girl and a very smart 5-year-old. I love her very much. We thank God every day that she does not have severe manifestations. People with neurofibromatosis have a life with no certainty about the future.

If you would like more information about neurofibromatosis, you many contact the national foundation at 1-800-848-NNFF or www.nf.org.
