No holiday for sales tax

Missouri's first foray into the arena of the sales-tax moratorium may prove less of an attraction for shoppers from across the state's borders or boost to the economy next year than originally hoped.

The reason is that many cities and counties are apparently declining the state's invitation to drop their sales-tax collections on selected school items during the designated weekend: Aug. 13-15, 2004. ...

The idea of the sales-tax holiday appeared to have struck a positive chord with the public. The state was inundated with calls only a few months ago from people who thought the tax plan was to be implemented in August of this year. ...

Missouri had the opportunity to cash in on the tax holiday. Maybe it still can. But clearly the fact that many counties and cities won't be participating could dampen the enthusiasm.
