Help needed to move school in Scott City

To the editor:

I live in a town of 6,000 people. It is amazing to me that, out of 6,000, it's a group of about 100 who make the difference in this town: garden club, women's club, Kiwanis, historical preservation. And please don't fault me if I didn't mention you.

There are a lot of folks who complain about how it should be. But it is quite astonishing that they're not willing to participate.

Well, here's an opportunity. There is a schoolhouse, built in 1858, that will be razed if it isn't moved. This is a schoolhouse that schooled your great- or great-great grandparents.

There are no government funds for the move or the restoration. The building has been moved once and will be moved again. So it is completely ineligible.

I'm asking the citizens of Scott City and Cape Girardeau and everyone in the surrounding area to participate in the funding or work involved to keep this one-room schoolhouse alive. You can e-mail me at Redseadog@juno.com.
