Letter to the Editor

What about other positions Catholics hold?

To the editor:

David Limbaugh complains about what he perceives to be anti-Catholic bias on the part of Democratic U.S. senators against various Catholic federal appointees whom the senators are vetting, mostly on the issue of abortion.

Everyone knows that opposition to abortion is an official position of the Roman Catholic Church. On the other hand, not everyone knows that opposition to capital punishment too is an official Catholic position.

My question for Limbaugh, who seems to posit himself as an advocate of confirmations of Catholic federal appointees who will follow Catholic doctrine with regard to abortions: Will you be equally zealous in advocating the confirmations of Catholic appointees to the federal bench who intend to apply the official Catholic position on capital punishment whenever they sentence someone in a capital case? Or is your zeal in defending the application of official Catholic positions in federal governance limited to only those positions with which you are in agreement?
