Helping our schools

The Cape Girardeau Public School Foundation started out nearly a decade ago as a means for supplying money to a variety of projects in the school system. Since then the foundation has narrowed its focus to projects deemed innovative in their ability to promote learning.

Last week, the foundation awarded 11 grants to teachers totaling more than $20,000. The grants ranged from $550 to help Central High School students become better typists to $3,381 to improve the high school students' grammar and fluency in languages. More midsized grants will buy standing hand drums for Clippard Elementary School and pay for a Science Olympiad tournament at Central Junior High School.

We think the foundation's focus on the needs of classroom teachers is laudable. For the most part, these are not showy projects. They are simply meant to help our teachers and students succeed.
