Fond memories of Miss Holcomb

To the editor:

As I was reading about the new superintendent coming to the Nell Holcomb School District, a flood of childhood memories came rushing over me.

I attended the old Juden School from 1953 to 1957 and had the pleasure of knowing Miss Holcomb, as we all affectionately and respectfully called her.

I never heard a student say anything negative about her. She was a fabulous educator who included a special love and pride in each and every student. She showed respect for all and received that respect in return without ever having to demand it. We all loved her and would not even consider displaying any kind of behavior that would not be pleasing to her.

Miss Holcomb touched many lives in her long career, and I was one of those who remember her in a special way. In my opinion, she was the first lady of educators.

I wish the new superintendent well and I know he has one big challenge to maintain standards that would meet Miss Holcomb's expectations. She expected every student to be the best he could be, and she was always there to do her part and more to make sure we met her expectations.
