United in giving

Once again, United Way of Southeast Missouri has exceeded its latest fund-raising goal. Donations are well over the $1.1 million target set last year, when natural disasters placed a heavy demand on generous donors.

United Way funds programs in Cape Girardeau County, Scott City, Perryville and Marble Hill. The fact that these communities understand the need for these programs -- 40 in all -- underscores the giving by so many individuals, institutions, businesses and industries.

No successful fund-raising campaign happens on its own. It takes planning and organization to pull of a project of this scope. Kathy Bertrand's leadership as campaign chairman, along with executive director Nancy Jernigan, was mirrored again and again by all those volunteers who took on special responsibilities during the money-raising effort.

Special credit also goes to the 20 top donors, which generate 70 percent of the total giving to United Way of Southeast Missouri.

The challenges that lie ahead for the area served by United Way are daunting. But thanks to everyone who writes a check or signs up for payroll deductions, tremendous strides are being made to address those needs.

Thousands of beneficiaries of the programs funded by United Way are thankful so many people care about their concerns. On their behalf, and on behalf of grateful communities:

Thank you.
