Charter changes need due diligence

To the editor:

In response to the story "Cape council, mayor split on changes to charter":

My wife and I are planning to retire to the Cape Girardeau area since she is originally from the area. We have been looking for property for the last two years, and I have been watching the events of the area.

Having spent eight years as a city councilman, I believe the ethics ordanance should be strengthened to one like the Roeland Park, Kan., has. Even the appearance of impropriety is ill-suited for local government.

Secondly, I would not approve appointments over an election for those who represent my interests.

Lastly, user fees might be the only one of the proposals that I could endorse based upon how it was written. I would suggest the council take a hard look at the issues and complete a due-diligence evaluation proir to committing to the proposed changes.

ED MACAN, Roeland Park, Kan.
